Edwin Jahiel 2009 Undergraduate Writing Award

The Unit for Cinema Studies announces the third annual Edwin Jahiel Undergraduate Writing Award. The Unit will award $250 for a research paper written by an undergraduate Cinema Studies major or minor.

This award honors the numerous contributions of Dr. Edwin Jahiel, professor of French and Cinema Studies and founding director of the Unit for Cinema Studies. For more than forty years, he was a tireless advocate for film education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Criteria
  • The paper must have been completed for a class taken for Cinema Studies credit.
  • The paper must be typed and double spaced, with a length of 10-20 pages.
  • Papers must be identified by faculty nomination or by self-nomination with the support (signature) of the faculty member of the course in which the paper was written.
Selection Process
  • The winner will be selected by a committee of no fewer than three Cinema Studies faculty members.
  • Submitted papers will be judged in a blind review process. No identifying information (student’s name, the course in which the paper was written, and faculty member supporting the paper) should appear anywhere in the submitted essay.
  • The research question posed, methodology, argument, and bibliography are among the factors that will be considered.

Applications are available on line or from the Unit for Cinema Studies Advising Office (3035 FLB). Papers and completed applications are due on or before April 30, 2009. They must be delivered to the Unit for Cinema Studies Advising Office (3035 FLB) or the mailbox of Richard Leskosky (3072 FLB).
