CINE 466 Japanese Cinema



Focuses on the range of Japanese cinema as it has been influenced by and responds to aspects of Japanese history, tradition, and culture. We will examine such topics as: the relation of cinema to traditional aesthetic modes such as painting, theatre, and oral story-telling; the myth-making function of genres, such as samurai and melodrama; responses to modernization and Westernization; social movements and formations of sub-cultures. Prerequisite: Two college level courses in cinema studies or East Asian Languages and Cultures, or graduate standing. (Cross-listed as EALC 466) 3 undergraduate hours or 4 graduate hours.
