CINE 493 German Cinema I



German film from its inception through Expressionism, the New Objectivity of the 1920's, and the Weimar Republic to the Third Reich. The thematic approach seeks to place early German film in its historical context, especially with regard to literature and the other arts. Directors studied include Murnau, Pabst, Lang and Riefenstahl, among others. Students are expected to read extensively critical studies of German film and literature of the period. Weekly screenings and discussion, two papers, midterm, and final. This course is conducted entirely in English. Knowledge of German useful but not required. 3 Hours.
