Cinema Studies Library Resources

Print and non-print resources for Cinema Studies can be found in various locations throughout the illinois library system. In addition to the rich holdings scattered throughout the Stacks, major collections can be found in the following libraries.

  • Stacks. The main collection of the illinois Library contains a wealth of monographs and journals on the entire range of Cinema Studies topics. Items can be located through the Library's on-line catalogue.

  • Cinema Studies Library. Located in the English Library (which also serves the disciplines of English and Theatre), the Cinema Studies Library comprises the core collection and bibliographic research center for Cinema Studies. The collection includes current issues of periodical titles; an in-depth reference section for bibliographies, dictionaries, indexes, writing manuals, concordances, and histories; and a circulating collection of critical and historical scholarship. 321 Main Library.

  • Undergraduate Library Media Center. The Media Center serves as the chief audiovisual facility for the University of Illinois Library through the provision of non-print instructional materials in support of the University's curriculum. It has developed a non-print collection of nearly 10,000 titles on various formats and subjects (mostly feature films and television programs) to accommodate the needs of undergraduate and graduate courses as well as for self-improvement and entertainment by the entire campus and the surrounding community. The Media Center provides viewing stations in its major service area for on-site viewing as well as outside loan to professors and teaching assistants for classroom instruction purposes. Reservations for titles and viewing equipment need to be made in person at the Media Desk. The Media Center also provides a variety of on-line and CD-ROM databases. The video collection can be accessed through the Library's on-line catalogue. First Floor, Undergraduate Library.

  • Undergraduate Library. Housing a general collection geared toward the needs of first and second year students, the Undergraduate Library serves as a logical point of introduction to the larger University Library system. The Undergrad Library collection contains many general books on film topics, current popular film magazine subscriptions, reserve readings for various Cinema Studies courses, and thousands of non-print film and film-related items. The reference collection of approximately 10,000 items, including some 60 print and electronic periodical indexes, has been developed to support undergraduate research. 1402 West Gregory Drive.

  • Rare Book & Special Collections Library. The Rare Book & Special Collections Library houses more than a hundred special collections, including a collection of thousands of film and television scripts (in some cases represented by versions in different stages of development). 346 Main Library

  • Communications Library. The Communications Library serves the College of Communications and the Institute of Communications Research. It contains materials on advertising, journalism, radio and television broadcasting, cable and satellites, telecommunications, telegraph, telephone, freedom of the press, media studies, polling, public opinion, popular culture, and the post office. 122 Gregory Hall.

It is also worth checking the Urbana Free Library, which has a searchable on-line catalog (actually, for all the libraries in the Lincoln Trail Library System of East Central Illinois). In a library rating index based on a wide variety of statistical measures of use, collection quality, and operational efficiency in the January 1999 issue of American Libraries, the journal of the American Library Association, the Urbana Free Library ranked second among all 600 Illinois public libraries and 21st among the more than 3,000 American public libraries that serve populations over 10,000 . The Urbana Free Library also houses the Jewish Heritage Video Collection, which explores Jewish culture and history through film. The JHVC video library contains nearly 200 film and television programs, including feature films, children's programs, foreign films, Yiddish classics, and documentaries. 201 S.
