Databases and Other Sources of General Film Information
The following institutions and enterprises include on their web sites, among other services and information resources, searchable databases which provide film credits, ratings, box office figures, and other data useful for identifying individual films or filmmakers and their place within the industry and its history. Several of these sites originate in Illinois and will have particular relevance for residents of the state.
- American Film Institute.
The AFI web site provides information about the AFI's activities in education and film preservation, biographies of filmmakers honored with AFI Lifetime Achievement Awards, obituaries of recently deceased filmmakers and stars, and the first on-line screening series of (short) Hollywood films.
- Illinois Arts Council.
Check out what is happening in the arts in Illinois (film is included in the Council's Media Arts category) and, if you are an Illinois resident, find out how to apply for a grant to complete your film or other art project.
- Library of Congress.
Search the Library of Congress on-line catalog for books, films, and any other information formats. The site also offers many other reference tools and information sources.
- United States Copyright Office. This Library of Congress site has much valuable information on copyright and copyright issues, including the most recent and significant legal cases involving copyright. It also includes a searchable database which can identify the copyright holders of films, books, music, and documents dating from 1978 to the present.
- Freedom of Information Act. This Department of Justice site will tell you everything you need to know to find out everything the government is allowed to tell you about what it has collected on that filmmaker, actor, or other individual whose career you are researching.
- National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture.
The NAMAC Online Support Center provides a central site
where media organizations, producers and media educators can
connect with each other, learn about the services and programs offered by
the nation's major media arts groups, find current news and useful resources, and share experiences and insights about film, video, audio and interactive.
- Moving Image Collections.
MIC lets you discover, locate in archives, and even (in some cases) view moving images from around the world. Special sections are provided for General Users, Archivists, and Science Eduators
- CineMedia.
CineMedia makes available links to more than 25,000 film-related web sites.
- Facets Multimedia.
If you are interested in renting or buying videos of foreign films, American independents, or Hollywood classics, check the huge Facets collection. Facets now also manages the Whole Toon Catalogue, which specializes in animated films.
- DocuSeek. This search site allows you to conduct a simultaneous search of several leading film distributors' complete collections for independent documentary, social issue, and educational videos.
- Drew's Script-O-Rama.
This site provides hundreds of links to on-line film and TV scripts, transcripts of films, and anime scripts.
- Movie Review Query Engine.
The MRQE links to more than 635,000 on-line reviews of more than 68,000 films.
- Movies.com.
This site provides a scoreboard of how a film rated (positive, negative, mixed) with national critics.
- The Film Maker's Home Pages.
Also known as filmmaker.com, this site is intended as an online resource for independent filmmakers and contains articles, FAQs, bulletin board style discussion areas, a live chat section, and the LOAFS (Library of Annotated Film Schools) and DUMPS (Directing Unsuccessful Motion Picture Shorts) archives.
- Internet Encyclopedia ofCinematographers. This site has biographies and filmographies for more than 550 internationally known cinematographers.
- Locations. The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations lets you find out where your favorite film was made so you can visit the sites yourself.
- Find A Grave. It may sound macabre, but sometimes it can be helpful for your research to know where someone is buried as well as the date and cause of death. This site includes many filmmakers, actors, and other sorts of entertainers and artists in its searchable database of more than 18 million entries.
- Film Box Office Database.
This database contains comprehensive box office data on more than 3,200 motion pictures released between 1989 and the present.
