National Cinemas

  • Australia
    • The Australian Film Commission web site is the major gateway to Australian film and television on the Internet, providing access to over 700 sites.

    • OzFilm, or Australian Film, part of the Culture and Communication Reading Room at Murdoch University, is dedicated to providing students of film and media with an extensive and valuable resource through which to study the magic of cinema within an Australian context.

  • Brazil. The Cinebrasil Moviedatabase, part of the Cultural Project Cinema Brasil na Internet authorized by the Ministry for Culture, provides news about recent Brazilian productions and a searchable database of Brazilian films.


  • Canada. The National Film Board of Canada (NFBC) maintains a bilingual site which affords access to the Board's extensive catalogue of films, texts on its history and current activities, and a database for its films and filmmakers.


  • China

  • Denmark. Danish Film Institute. The Danish national agency responsible for supporting and encouraging film and cinema culture supplies facts and figures on the Danish film industry.

  • England
    • British Film Institute. The site maintained by the BFI has comprehensive information on film production in England, film books, the Museum of the Moving Image, the National Film Theatre, the National Film and Television Archive, and the journal Sight & Sound, as well as the Institute itself.

    • Britmovie. This site provides a searchable database of British films and filmmakers.

  • Finland. The official site of the Finnish Film Foundation features information on recently completed Finnish films as well as those still in production and serves as a gateway to other sites dealing with Finnish cinema.


  • France. The official site of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States lists many sources for information on the French film industry.


  • Germany
    • Early German Film, edited by Olaf Brill and Thomas Schultke, focuses on the history of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and the early career of Fritz Lang but also has much information on other films and directors of the 1910's and 1920's.

    • The German-Hollywood Connection, a sister site of Hyde Flippo's All Things German site, focuses on the many influences of German film and filmmakers on Hollywood but also contains much information on German Cinema itself.

    • CineGraph presents texts on the history of German-language cinema compiled by the Hamburgisches Centrum für Filmforschung e.V. , a professional cinema research association. In addition to text from various CineGraph publications, the site offers announcements and background information.

  • India
    • Asian Film Connections: India, a University of Southern California web site, provides a list of selected Indian films from 1998 on, as well as basic information, reviews, and articles from Asia's leading film journals.

    • Manas, dealing with India and Indian culture in general, has a special section on Indian cinema, with discussions of specific directors, films, and performers.

  • Iceland. The Icelandic Film Fund site supplies information on Iceland's film industry, its national film archive, and the Reykjavik Film Festival.


  • Iran. Cinema Iran provides reviews of Iranian films and profiles of Iranian actors and directors.


  • Ireland. The Ireland Film and Television Net is the global information service about the audio-visual industry in Ireland.


  • Japan
    • Asian Film Connections: Japan, a University of Southern California web site, provides a list of selected films made in Japan from 1998 on, as well as basic information, reviews, and articles from Asia's leading film journals.

    • Kinema Club offers lists of resources, both on-line and in reference libraries, on Japanese film and other moving-image media as well as discussions of recent Japanese releases.

    • Midnight Eye includes reviews of the latest Japanese films, interviews with filmmakers, and discussions of older Japanese films.

  • Korea
    • Asian Film Connections: Korea, a University of Southern California web site, provides a list of selected films made in Korea from 1997 on, as well as basic information, reviews, and articles Asia's leading film journals.

    • Korea. The KoreanFilm.org, by Darcy Paquet of Korea University in Seoul, is a site designed to give the reader a quick yet comprehensive overview of the films, issues, people and events that shape the film community in Korea. It contains links to a searchable database on Korean films maintained by the Korean Film Archive, to the official webpage of the Korean Motion Picture Promotion Corporation, and to the sites of the Pusan and Puchon film festivals.

  • Latvia. Films in Latvia explores ninety years of Latvian cinema.


  • New Zealand. The New Zealand Film Commission provides information and descriptions of recent features and shorts made in New Zealand as well as general information about making films in Aotearoa (New Zealand).


  • Poland. Polish Cinema During the Period 1989-1999 and essay by Bozena Janicka, discusses Polish film during the last decade of the twentieth century.


  • Sweden. The Thai Film Foundation provides information and descriptions of recent features and shorts made in Sweden as well as general Swedish film news.


  • Thailand. The Thai Film Foundation provides newsa and articles on the history of Thai cinema.


  • Turkey
    • Turkish Melodrama Posters. This website contains not only a history of Turkish Cinema but also a master's thesis by Nazli Eda Noyan on the Turkish melodrama posters and romance between 1965-1977 as well as images of the posters which are not available elsewhere.

    • Turkish Film Database/Turkish Cinema Newsletter. This site combines a searchable database of Turkish films (1914 to the present) with an archive of the Turkish Cinema Newsletter.
