Technology and Technical Aspects

  • Dolby Lab News. On-line newsletter of the company responsible for Dolby sound systems.

  • Film Sizes. One Hundred Years of Film Sizes discusses the history of the various sizes, both familiar and obscure, of both professional and amateur filmstocks.

  • IMAX . The IMAX home site deals with the largest screen film process currently in regular use and inlcudes locations of all IMAX theatres and a newsletter.

  • Pixelvision. This page deals with one of the most low-tech types of moving image recording devices. It contains an essay by Michael O'Reilly on the technology, history, and aesthetics of Pixelvision, a Fisher-Price toy video camera sold in the late 1980's which records audio and video on ordinary audio cassette tapes. It subsequently used by independent/experimental filmmakers in part because of the grainy, quasi-slow motion quality of its image.

  • Sound in Movies. FilmSound.Org is the most comprehensive site dedicated to understanding and appreciating all aspects of film sound.

  • Widescreen. The Digital Bits site is concerned with films on DVDs and so gives examples of the different widescreen aspect ratios and formats commonly used and how they fare in transfers to video.
